RR: The War Nerd Iliad

May 23, 2018
7:00 pm -

No cover.  2 drink minimum.

John Dolan, aka Gary Brecher, The War Nerd, has written the first cool translation of The Iliad since they said it out loud round the campfire.  What makes it different? Because it’s in prose, gripping prose, telling a story that is hilarious and violent, about civilizations totally different than ours.  It’s more like a fantasy novel about superpowered beings than a prissy poem. But that’s what poetry was like back then, more like our movies than our poems.

There will be books to buy and get signed, and lots of drinking, in
one of the most beautiful Art Deco spaces in New York, made up to recreate the 1920s speakeasy it once was.

John will be interviewed by Mark Ames.  He’ll do some readings and there will of course be Q&A, about both the Iliad and any war you ever wanted to know about.

For those who don’t know them, John and Mark produce one of the best
podcasts on Patreon, Radio War Nerd, now up to 130th weekly episode.

John has published several books of poetry and literary criticism,
dozens of articles on literature and culture, and hundreds of articles on war under his nom de plume de guerre.

Mark cofounded the eXile with Matt Taibbi, and is one of the only English-speaking people who know exactly what happened in Russia during the 1990s transition and since. He wrote _Going Postal: Rage, Murder, and Rebellion: From Reagan’s Workplaces to Clinton’s Columbine and Beyond_ in 2005, which is just as relevant as ever.  He has also published hundreds of long-read articles on an amazing range of subjects.  He is one of the world’s foremost investigative journalists.  He’s currently contemplating writing a book on the current Russia scare, and we should all use this opportunity to drunkenly encourage him.
