THE LAST TABOOS: SEX, LIES AND OPERA LIBRETTOS
Adultery! Cannabalism! Infanticide! Necrophilia! Join historian and journalist Tony Perrottet as he interviews Vivien Schweitzer about her sensational new book Mad Love: An Introduction to Opera.
Why does music so often make people uncomfortable? How has opera in particular shocked audiences over the centuries with its subversive themes? Why are contemporary operas so grisly and violent? (One critically well-received recent work, created by a young woman, ends in a gang rape).
Audience members are encouraged to dress for the night in their chic opera finest; the event will be enlivened by bursts of song, complimentary wine, belly dance inspired by the famous strip scene in Strauss’ Salome and (at 9 pm) live jazz.

7:30—Wine Reception
8:00—Literary discussion
8:45—Bellydance by “The Two Laurens”
9:00—Live Jazz by Buck and a Quarter Quartet
