John Batteiger claims Cleveland, Ohio, as his hometown. For reasons that no longer seem very smart, he pursued a career in journalism, and in 35 years has worked as a police beat, city hall and consumer affairs reporter, copy editor, technology editor, and wire editor. He spent 20 years in San Francisco before coming back east to New York in 2013. He works as an editor at The New York Times News Service.

Since 19 something or other, John Deiner has been plodding through his journalism career—the majority of which was spent as a travel editor at The Washington Post. There, he learned that the best way to learn about a place was to do stupid crap, from licking roadside glacial shards in Iceland to visiting Death Valley in late July. Today, he’s a content strategist at Google, which he uses on occasion to dig up his old articles.

Michael Hunt is an award-winning sportswriter and sports columnist who has written for newspapers in the Southeast and the Midwest, including more than 10 years as the lead sports columnist at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
